Beyond Medicine: A Home Where the Elderly Are Heard, Valued, and Celebrated
In this unique and caring community, the people who come here aren't simply patients; they are individuals in pursuit of a place where they can enjoy their retirement years with freedom, free from the fear of being alone. They have chosen to be here due to various ailments or frailty, seeking medical care, but it's so much more than that.
These individuals have lived full lives, managing households and nurturing families for over 30 years. However, with their children now taking the lead, they find themselves shifting to the background. So, what brings them to this place?
They aren't seeking a new project; they had the drive for that in their younger years. Rather, some are children who simply want their parents to be happy, often feeling guilty for not being able to care for them personally. So, how do we keep both groups content?
The solution lies in making them feel protected, just as we would protect our own parents when they needed us the most. Are they patients? No, they are family. Each new arrival becomes a new family member, and our mission is to help them find their relevance in the world, not as liabilities, but as valuable assets with a wealth of experiences to share.
So, how do we achieve this? Let's break the ice and motivate them to find themselves:
1. Address the root causes of their ailments.
2. Maintain their health parameters daily.
3. Focus on making them physically fit, strong, and efficient.
4. Engage in daily conversations.
5. Identify their aspirations, unfinished projects, and dreams.
6. Strengthen them philosophically to navigate life's challenges.
7. Provide them with what they need to build trust in the system and the people around them.
We aren't expecting them to start large companies or climb mountains. We simply want them to be happy and independent, to make them realize that they are still relevant to the world. Regardless of conditions like schizophrenia or dementia, they have feelings we can tap into, helping them understand that they don't have to lament their ailments or feel abandoned by their children. Their children made the right choice to provide them with an environment where they can live fulfilled lives and explore new passions.
Throughout life, society prescribes different roles and expectations for each age group. However, in old age, there is no defined rulebook, no set project to complete, and no universal measure of success. The common goal is simple: to live happily. Those who thrive in their 90s continue to run their households or pursue personal parameters they have set.
In essence, we are creating a community that operates as a family, working together to ensure that every member finds their unique relevance in the world, with a focus on happiness and well-being above all else.
